Like any mechanical equipment, your air conditioner requires annual maintenance by a qualified and experienced technician to ensure it runs as efficiently as possible.
Professionally servicing the unit prevents large repair and breakdown costs, reduces dust and airborne particles blowing into your home and will reduce your electricity costs.
Between these professional visits however there are 3 simple steps you can do yourself to maintain your air conditioning unit and ensure it runs efficiently.
1. Clean your Air Filters
When air flow is obstructed by dirty and clogged filters, the air conditioner needs to work harder to push air through and can even bypass the filter and deposit dirt directly into the evaporator coil. This will effect the coils capacity.
Your filters should be cleaned at least every quarter however if you have pets or allergies, we recommend that you clean your filters monthly. It’s simple to do:
- Check the instruction manual for details on how to access the filters. Can’t find the manual, no problem! Visit the manufacturers website and download a digital copy!
- Take the filter outside and hose down both sides clean. You will see the clogged dirt peel down the filter as you go.
TIP: For a more water conscious clean, take the filter outside and give it a good shake. Grab your vacuum and attach your dusting brush head. Ensure the filter is completely dry before putting it back in the unit!
2. Set a Reasonable Temperature
By setting your thermostat at a comfortable temperature that won’t make your unit have to work too hard will help maintain it working efficiently. As a general guide in a moderate climate, in Summer, between 22° – 25° is ideal. In Winter, set the unit to between 18°-21° for heating.
Setting a reasonable temperature will also help keep electricity costs low. Increasing your thermostat by even just 1°C in warm weather can reduce the running costs up to 10%. The lower you set the temperature when cooling and the higher you set it when heating, the more you are adding to your power bill.
TIP: To help your air conditioner out on hot days, keep your doors, curtains and blinds closed. Adjust your ceiling fans counter clockwise and plant deciduous trees that shade your house in Summer but will let the sun shine through in Winter.
3. Keep Your Outdoor Unit Clear of Obstruction
Outdoor condenser coils can also become very dirty if the outdoor environment is dusty or if there is foliage nearby. You can easily see the condenser coil and notice if dirt is collecting on its fins.
Keep the unit clear removing any grass, plants, brush away any dust, leaves and cobwebs. Allow at least 2 feet around the unit to allow for adequate airflow around the condenser. It is not recommended that you open up the unit to clean its internal components. Leave that to us in your annual service!
By following these 3 simple steps between professional cleans you will ensure your comfort all year round!
